Faculty Workload FTE and Course Load

 Workload Notes:

Student Workload FTE is based on instructional student credit hours.

Major Headcount includes declared majors only. Proposed majors are counted as undeclared and are excluded from these ratios. Departments that sponsor multiple majors are credited for all of them. Combined majors are attributed to the primary sponsoring department. Students with double majors are counted as 0.5 and triple majors as .33 in each.

Total Payroll Faculty includes senate faculty adjusted for leaves, sabbaticals, and centrally funded course buyouts plus non-senate faculty FTE.

Permanent Budgeted Faculty FTE includes positions filled by senate faculty. Open provisions and provisions held by academic administrators are not included. Leaves and sabbaticals are not subtracted.

Permanent Payroll Faculty FTE are senate faculty adjusted for leaves, sabbaticals, and centrally funded course buyouts.

Notes: In 2018-19, the School of Engineering began restructuring its departments and programs. New departments were created and senate faculty were assigned accordingly. New majors, degrees, and subject codes did not take effect until 2019-20. In order to create 2018-19 instructional metrics for Engineering, majors, degrees, and courses were remapped to the new departments.

Several divisions include a "Division General" category. The Division General category includes programs that do not have their own department (e.g., DANM).

Course Load Notes:

Course counts are the number of regularly scheduled, for credit, non-individual study courses taught by an individual faculty member, a department and/or a division.

Enrollments are the number of students enrolled in a course on the third week census date.

Note: For some types of courses, reporting of teaching activity involves proration between instructors and departments. Guidelines for the reporting of these instructional activities are summarized below.

Split teaching responsibilities (“Team taught courses”): course credit (course counts and enrollments) are split evenly among the primary instructors.

Courses with no primary instructor: course counts and enrollments for courses taught by (a) secondary instructor(s) and overseen by a supervisory instructor(s) are credited to the secondary instructor(s).

Courses taught by faculty with split appointments: course counts and enrollments for courses taught by faculty with a split appointment are distributed to departments (and divisions) based on the distribution of the faculty member's appointment. (e.g., a faculty member with a 60-40 split appointment between two departments would have their course counts and enrollments partitioned 60-40 to the two departments.)

Related courses: the instructor(s) receive(s) prorated credit for each of the related courses for a total of one course, and credit for the sum of the enrollments in each of the related courses.

Concurrent courses: the instructor(s) receive(s) prorated credit for each of the concurrent courses for a total of one course, and credit for the sum of the enrollments in each of the concurrent courses.

Cross-listed courses: the instructor(s) receive(s) prorated credit for each of the cross-listed courses for a total of one course, and credit for the sum of the enrollments in each of the cross-listed courses.

Courses offered for other than five credits: course and enrollment credits in classes with a unit value less than or greater than 5 are normalized to the standard five unit value (e.g., a two-credit course is prorated at 40% for both course counts and enrollments).
