Who participates in the survey?

All currently enrolled graduate students (Master's and Doctoral) are invited to participate in this campus-wide effort to evaluate and improve academic and social experiences of our students.  Since 2011, at least 50% of graduate students participated in the survey.

How is this survey different from other surveys?

The Graduate Student Survey, an ongoing project since 2007, is designed to provide vital information about a wide range of aspects of graduate education.  Its broad range of topics includes faculty teaching and mentoring, program requirements, research opportunities, TA training, and campus climate.  Results from the Graduate Student Survey are made directly available to academic programs and other decisionmakers on campus who are tasked with improving the experience of students.

In late April 2021, IRAPS will be disseminating a separate form for graduate students to complete about plans for fall quarter, including coursework, research, and living location.

How will my privacy be protected?

Graduate Student Survey results will be reported only as aggregate data and only at the group level of analysis (for example, program or gender).  This means that the identities of respondents cannot be discovered by faculty, staff or anyone else.  For more information see the IRAPS Surveys Privacy and Confidentiality statement.

Why do I need to use my CruzID to log in?

Your CruzID simply provides a secure mechanism for eligible students to access their survey.  Using this technique, we can ensure that only UCSC graduate students can submit responses, that each person takes the survey only once, that you can log back in to the survey site to continue your survey if interrupted, and that only you can view your uncompleted survey.  All survey responses are confidential.

Who can I contact if I have problems logging in?

The survey uses your CruzID and password.  If you don't remember your password or have problems logging in, contact the ITS Support Center at 831-459-4357; support is available Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

How long will this take?

The survey should take about 30 minutes to complete.  It is a comprehensive survey that covers many sides of the graduate student experience, and is only available once in two years.  By taking 30 minutes, you will make an impact on the quality of the graduate experience at UCSC for future students.

Can I take a break and continue my survey later?

Yes!  Your survey responses are saved as you go through each page of the survey.  You can log back in to the survey site to continue your survey if interrupted.  Just return to this website and log in.

Do I need to complete the survey in order to be eligible for the prizes?

To enter the drawings without completing the survey, you must send an email request to surveys@ucsc.edu. This email must be received by June 30, 2021 to be entered in the final drawing. If you would like to be entered in the interim prize drawings, your eligibility starts one day after our receipt of your email.

Where can I learn about the survey results?

Results from previous years can be found at the Graduate Student Survey results page.  The 2021 survey is slated to be open until July.  To help promote dialogue and transparency about graduate student issues, we will also post the results of the 2021 survey as soon as they have been compiled.
